EDITION Hotels Explained | Plant-Filled Lobbies, Punch Rooms and Tokyo Tower From Bed

In Toranomon, the elevator opens on the 31st floor into a two-story lobby filled with plants, and Tokyo Tower stands in the window. In Ginza, a white staircase climbs from the lobby to a bar that serves punch from shared bowls. In Singapore, a spiral staircase in white plaster curls down from the lobby to the bar lounge. Three hotels, one brand, and a founder who opened Studio 54 before he ever opened a hotel.

Thirteen pages, about thirty minutes: what an EDITION stay feels like, where the brand is stronger than its peers, the Asian hotels to plan a trip around, and how to book so the stay includes more. Who it suits less, up front: travelers who want quiet, formal service, and anyone who needs a full resort spa in every city.

The last page has a checklist of twelve things to try at any EDITION. Three cost nothing. One of them is asking for a Tokyo Tower room as early as you can, which advisors who stayed there put at the top of their list.

01 · THE SHORT ANSWER

A lobby you will want to sit in, a bar worth staying in for, and quiet white rooms upstairs

A pale wood guest room with a white bed and armchair beside a wall of windows over Tokyo at night
A guest room at The Tokyo EDITION, Toranomon, at night, official gallery.

An EDITION stay is built around the public rooms. The lobby works as a living room for guests and locals, the bars are destinations on their own, and the rooms upstairs are calm, pale and simple. In Asia that means a plant-filled lobby 31 floors above Tokyo, a punch bar in Ginza, and a rooftop pool in Singapore with a clear window in its floor. Guests in Fora's client reviews come back to the same three things: the design, the views and staff who remember the occasion.

For December 13 to 16, the STARS rate and the public rate at The Singapore EDITION were the same US$376 a night. The STARS booking adds a US$100 hotel credit, a welcome amenity and an upgrade when available. How to plan it
  • Pick the moodToranomon for height and Tokyo Tower, Ginza for a smaller hotel in the shopping streets, Singapore for gardens and a rooftop pool.
  • Plan the eveningLeave one night free for the hotel's own bars. At EDITION they are a reason to stay, so book them like a restaurant.
  • Same cityWhere a classic luxury hotel is nearby, compare both. Our St. Regis guide covers the formal side.

02 · ORIGINS

The Tokyo EDITION, Ginza, from the street, official gallery.

Ian Schrager and Steve Rubell opened Studio 54 in New York in 1977. In 1984 they opened Morgans Hotel, which is widely credited with starting the boutique hotel category. Twenty-four years later Schrager sat down with Bill Marriott.

Scene January 29, 2008. Ian Schrager and Bill Marriott introduce Edition, a "lifestyle boutique hotel brand." Hotels will average 150 to 200 rooms, and the collection could one day pass 100. Bill Marriott calls the partnership "a magical combination."

2013The London EDITION opens in the former Berners Hotel: 173 wood-paneled rooms and the first Punch Room
2020 to 2023Asia grows: Tokyo Toranomon, then Tokyo Ginza and Singapore in 2023. Luxury Travel Advisor places Toranomon in 2020; a December 2022 Dezeen article says it opened "last year."
2025 to 202622 hotels at the end of 2025; Lake Como opens in March 2026

Each hotel is designed with a well-known architect or studio: Yabu Pushelberg in London, Kengo Kuma for both Tokyo hotels, Moshe Safdie's firm for the building in Singapore.

Worth slowing down for Waikiki and Istanbul, the first two EDITION hotels, no longer operate under the name, according to Business Traveller. The brand most travelers know began again with London in 2013, in a restored building with its original marble lobby. The first chapter was quietly rewritten.

03 · SIGNATURE MOMENTS

Five things you will find at almost every EDITION

A white sculptural spiral staircase curving down through a softly lit round space with warm wood walls
The spiral staircase at The Singapore EDITION, official gallery.

Every EDITION is designed for its city, but a handful of features repeat, and they are the ones guests photograph and write about.

The Lobby BarAn all-day bar in the lobby for guests and locals. In Singapore it has pink velvet walls and a rose-colored marble pool table; in Toranomon it looks over Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Bay
The Punch RoomShared bowls of punch in a paneled room. The first opened in London in 2013; Ginza's is described as Japan's first punch-focused bar; Singapore's is Yves Klein blue
The staircaseA sculpted spiral of white Venetian plaster in Singapore; a white metal stair up to the Punch Room in Ginza
The scentA signature scent created by Le Labo for EDITION, which the Singapore hotel describes as the first thing guests meet; Le Labo products in the bathrooms
PlantsA two-story planted lobby in Toranomon, vertical gardens on the Ginza facade, a sunken garden and courtyard in Singapore
Scene In Toranomon, the elevator rises to the 31st floor and opens into a two-story lobby filled with plants. Wooden louvers wrap the large beams overhead, and the seating looks out across Tokyo. A Fora advisor who stayed in October 2026 was handed a welcome drink at check-in.

Kengo Kuma, who designed the interiors, said the beams could not be hidden, so he wrapped them in wood and made them "a symbol of the hotel."

04 · ROOMS AND DESIGN

What you see when the door opens

A suite with a sofa, round marble table and bed in front of tall windows showing the lit city at night
A suite at The Tokyo EDITION, Toranomon, at night, official gallery.

EDITION rooms are deliberately quiet: pale wood, white linen, a few good pieces of furniture. The view and the size do the work, and in Tokyo both are generous by city standards.

Toranomon206 rooms including 22 suites on floors 31 to 36. Entry rooms are 42 square meters, with a Tokyo Tower view category; the Tower Suite is 108 square meters. Sliding wood screens separate sleeping and living areas
Ginza86 rooms including 10 suites over 14 floors; entry rooms from 41 square meters, which Luxury Travel Advisor calls the largest standard rooms in the district. Walnut, a faux fur throw and a black marble bathroom with a deep tub
Singapore204 rooms on six floors; Garden King rooms of 38 to 47 square meters with twin sinks, a rain shower and a soaking tub. Garden-view and terrace rooms look onto the courtyard

Guests praise the views again and again. Ben Schlappig of One Mile at a Time, who was critical of other parts of his Toranomon stay, called the Tokyo Tower view from his suite "pretty magical."

Worth slowing down for Kengo Kuma said he wanted to prove that "a real oasis" was possible at the heart of a big city. In Toranomon he put a planted garden terrace on top of a high-rise, which he described as unusual. The greenest room in the hotel is the one with no ceiling.

05 · SIGNATURE SERVICE

The service, and how to get the most from it

A rooftop terrace at night with patterned armchairs and candles in front of a tall green hedge, with Tokyo Tower lit in the distance
A rooftop terrace at The Tokyo EDITION, Ginza, official gallery.

EDITION service is relaxed rather than formal: no tailcoats, more first names. What guests remember are small personal gestures, usually tied to something they told the hotel.

What guests describe

  • Ginza, 2025: a guest celebrating an anniversary found Champagne and cake waiting; another checked out to a plate of macarons with a personal note written in chocolate
  • Toranomon, 2025: a guest on a birthday trip was met with a small cake, and housekeeping refreshed the room twice a day
  • Singapore, 2024: a guest arriving after a 17-hour flight was invited to use the spa while the room was prepared
  • Toranomon, 2024: when no upgrade was available, the hotel offered two drinks at the bar instead

These come from client reviews in the Fora Advisor Portal. A May 2026 Fora trip report adds that Toranomon staff gave recommendations beyond the usual tourist list and can send luggage ahead to your next city in Japan.

Make the most of itMost of the stories above start with an occasion the hotel knew about: a birthday, an anniversary, a long flight. Tell the hotel why you are coming and when you land. Ben Schlappig found service at the larger Toranomon hotel uneven during his 2025 stay and noticeably more personal at the smaller Ginza hotel, so the more you share ahead, the less you leave to chance.
How to plan it
  • Before arrivalSend the occasion, arrival time and flight. An advisor booking passes this to the hotel with the reservation.
  • First eveningAsk the concierge for one bar seat and one dinner table in the neighborhood. Guests say the team secures hard-to-get tables.
  • Moving onIn Japan, ask about sending luggage to your next hotel.

06 · DINING AND BARS

Where to eat and drink, hotel by hotel

A dim bar with deep blue velvet armchairs, a patterned rug and a glowing backlit bottle display
A bar at The Tokyo EDITION, Ginza, official gallery.

At most luxury hotels the bar is where you wait for dinner. At EDITION it is often the reason to book.

Scene Gold Bar at EDITION sits on the ground floor beside the Toranomon entrance and opens at 6 p.m. from Tuesday to Saturday. The walls are clad in charred yakisugi timber, and gold appears in the artwork. Time Out's reviewer found part of the illustrated cocktail menu visible only under blacklight.
ToranomonGold Bar (Asia's 50 Best Bars: No. 76 per One Mile at a Time in 2025; No. 67 per a Fora trip report in 2026); The Jade Room + Garden Terrace by chef Tom Aikens, with a terrace facing Tokyo Tower, Wednesday to Sunday; the Lobby Bar with afternoon tea from noon to 5 p.m.; the Blue Room, all day
GinzaThe Punch Room up the lobby staircase, with afternoon tea by day; Sophie at EDITION, a brasserie on the 14th floor; The Roof above it, described at opening as Ginza's first natural wine bar
SingaporeFYSH at EDITION, chef Josh Niland's first restaurant outside Australia, with fish-bone noodles and a cod-fat chocolate tart; the pink Lobby Bar; the Punch Room; Tanica for modern Asian; afternoon tea in The Conservatory; Wonder Room, a micro-club on weekends
ShanghaiA rooftop with Bund views, and Electric Circus, a club named for the building's past as the Shanghai Power Company offices

Days matter. Gold Bar is closed on Sunday and Monday, the Jade Room on Monday and Tuesday, and Ginza guests report that the Punch Room does not open every night and takes reservations.

07 · A DAY AT AN EDITION

One day, from a morning swim to a weekend nightcap

The rhythm of an EDITION day runs late. The times below come from hotel pages and published reviews; check yours on arrival.

MorningThe 24-hour gym, or a swim: Toranomon's indoor pool works on reserved time slots; Singapore's 43-meter pool is on the roof
Late morningWalk the neighborhood: Ginza Station is two minutes from the Ginza hotel; Azabudai Hills is a walk from Toranomon; Orchard Road is next to Singapore
AfternoonAfternoon tea: the Lobby Bar in Toranomon, the Punch Room in Ginza, The Conservatory in Singapore
SunsetUp to the roof: Time Out suggests The Roof in Ginza before sunset; in Toranomon, the Garden Terrace faces Tokyo Tower
6 p.m.Gold Bar opens in Toranomon (Tuesday to Saturday)
LateA punch, or on weekends in Singapore, the Wonder Room
Worth slowing down for The rooftop pool at The Singapore EDITION is 43 meters long, and the middle of its white-tiled floor is a clear acrylic oculus. Through it you see the garden courtyard nine floors below. The pool has a view in two directions.

08 · ASIA'S MUST-STAYS

Five EDITION hotels in Asia to plan a trip around

Marriott counted five EDITION hotels in Asia Pacific at the end of 2025. The last column is the one thing to do at each.

Tokyo, ToranomonFloors 31 to 36 of Tokyo World Gate, by Kengo Kuma. Do: a drink at sunset facing Tokyo Tower, then Gold Bar downstairs
Tokyo, Ginza86 rooms in a latticed tower off Chuo-dori, also by Kuma. Do: afternoon tea in the Punch Room, then The Roof
SingaporeOff upper Orchard Road, opened November 2023, one Michelin Key. Do: swim over the oculus, then dinner at FYSH
ShanghaiTwo 1920s Art Deco buildings on Nanjing Road East, near the Bund; 145 rooms. Do: a drink on the roof looking at the Bund
Sanya512 rooms, 46 suites and 17 villas on Haitang Bay, Hainan, around a private ocean of about 20,000 square meters for paddleboarding and kayaking. Do: sunset at the SkyBar by the infinity pool
How to plan it
  • Split TokyoSpend the first nights in Ginza for walking and shopping, the last in Toranomon for the view.
  • Singapore stopoverTwo or three nights fit a long-haul connection. Ask about the spa if you land before check-in.
  • FamiliesSanya has the most space and a family play area; Toranomon has generous rooms and connecting options.

09 · HOTEL HIGHLIGHTS

What each hotel is known for, and the Taiwan question

Outside ratings for the Asian hotels, and what reviewers single out at each.

SingaporeOne Michelin Key; Forbes Travel Guide recommended (Portal). Time Out gave it five stars and called it "luxurious without the pretense"
ToranomonForbes Travel Guide recommended (Portal); Gold Bar on Asia's 50 Best Bars; Time Out five stars in March 2026
GinzaForbes Travel Guide recommended (Portal); Time Out five stars in June 2025, which called it a "stylish sanctuary"
Guest scoresFora client reviews average 4.9 out of 5 at all three hotels (35, 14 and 11 reviews)

And in Taiwan?

As of October 2026 there is no EDITION in Taiwan, and searches in English and Chinese found no announced project. For travelers based in Taiwan, Tokyo is the closest pair of EDITIONs, and Shanghai and Singapore are short flights. For a design-led Marriott hotel in Taipei, see W Taipei in W Hotels, explained.

10 · AGAINST ITS PEERS

Where EDITION is stronger, and when to pick it

A planted courtyard path between low hotel wings with lit windows at dusk, with city towers behind
The garden courtyard at The Singapore EDITION at dusk, official gallery.

Three strengths come up again and again when reviewers and guests compare EDITION with other luxury hotels.

  • Design by name architects. Kengo Kuma in Tokyo, Moshe Safdie's firm in Singapore, Yabu Pushelberg in London, each hotel built around plants, wood and light
  • Bars that draw locals. Gold Bar on Asia's 50 Best Bars, a Punch Room in each of the three hotels covered here, and lobby bars that stay busy into the evening
  • Neighborhood addresses at a human scale. About 210 rooms on average, in Ginza, off Orchard Road and near the Bund, with personal gestures that guests remember
vs WBoth are Marriott's lifestyle side. W is louder and music-led; EDITION is quieter, smaller and more design-focused. Compare in W Hotels vs EDITION
vs Ritz-CarltonRitz-Carlton is formal, with Club Lounges and kids' programs; EDITION is relaxed and built around bars. See The Ritz-Carlton, explained
vs St. RegisSt. Regis leads with butlers and an evening Champagne ritual; EDITION leads with design and nightlife. See our St. Regis guide
vs Four SeasonsA Singapore guest who has stayed at both EDITIONs called it a "refreshing, modern Four Seasons." EDITION stays also earn Marriott Bonvoy points

Not every comparison goes EDITION's way. One Mile at a Time found Toranomon's pool and gym without views and its hallways worn; an advisor rated Ginza below its sister hotel for rooms and facilities. Where the brand wins clearly is atmosphere: the lobby, the bars and the view.

A first day at any EDITION, and who it suits

Times vary by hotel. The order below works at most EDITIONs, with the bars as the frame for the evening.

A first day, in order
  • Check-inAsk which bars are open tonight, afternoon tea times, and where the STARS credit applies.
  • First hourSit in the lobby: Tokyo Tower in Toranomon, the gold dome in Singapore, the staircase in Ginza.
  • AfternoonAfternoon tea, the pool or the spa.
  • SunsetThe roof or the terrace.
  • EveningDinner in the hotel or nearby, then the Punch Room or Gold Bar.

A good fit

  • You choose hotels for design and atmosphere, and you like a lively lobby
  • You plan cocktail bars into the trip the way you plan dinners
  • You want a central neighborhood base in Tokyo or Singapore
  • You collect Marriott Bonvoy points and want a stylish stay that still earns them

A weaker fit

  • You want quiet and tradition; a family with young twins wrote that Toranomon's upbeat lobby suited them precisely because it is not tranquil
  • You expect full facilities everywhere: Ginza has a small gym and no spa or pool
  • You want to walk to most sights from Toranomon; guests mention a 10 to 15 minute ride
