ANA InterContinental Manza Beach Review: Floors and Baths

ANA InterContinental Manza Beach Resort opened in 1983 and holds 400 rooms on a headland at Serakaki, in Onna Village, Okinawa. The public bath, the parking fee, and club lounge access are all tied to which floor you book: two identical 32 square meter rooms, one on the third floor and one on the fifth, can differ by more than 2,000 yen a night. It is one of the oldest international beach resorts on the main island, which is also why reviews of it split so sharply.

This guide runs one facility per page: the floor tiers, the operating windows, the fee structure, and how the travel advisor channel changes the booking. Thirteen pages, about eighteen minutes.

The last page carries a tickable list of twelve things. Items 2, 5, and 9 cost nothing and need no reservation, and most guests never notice them. Tick a few, leave the rest.

01 · BASICS

One headland, one hotel, forty years

This resort has no neighbors. The whole Serakaki headland is its site, and outside the gate there is only Route 58 and the Onna Village coastline. That geography settles two things: the rooms face water on three sides, and once you arrive you stop wanting to drive anywhere.

Driving and taking the limousine bus differ by almost forty minutes. The gap is not distance but road type. The expressway to Yaka and then down to the coast is much faster than following Route 58 north the whole way, which is the route the limousine bus takes, calling at hotel after hotel along the way.

How to plan it

RentingSights along this coast are spread out, so a car works best. Hand it over at the entrance and let the valet take it.
No carThe limousine bus stops at the door, so luggage moves once. The cost is 100 minutes and a long list of intermediate stops.
Day oneSave Cape Manzamo for checkout morning rather than arrival day. It is a five minute drive, and on day one you are usually still unpacking.

02 · LAYOUT

Main building, beach zone, and the path between them

This resort takes up a whole estate rather than a single tower. The main building holds the lobby, the restaurants, the public bath, the gym, and every guest room. The beach zone has its own buildings for the beachfront restaurant, changing rooms, the dive desk, and shops. A footpath runs between the two.

Human factorsThat footpath is the single most misjudged item at this resort. Photographs make it look as though the pool sits directly on the sand. On foot it has level changes, stepped sections, and a surface that turns slippery after rain, which makes it hard work with a stroller or a suitcase. The shuttle car is not a fallback here. For anyone traveling with small children, older relatives, or reduced mobility, it is the main route. Ask on arrival where it picks up and how often it runs, rather than working it out from the beach.

Take your time The planting on this headland is forty years grown, not newly installed. Banyan aerial roots hang almost to the ground on both sides of the path, with uplifted Ryukyuan limestone pushing through between them, and for a few meters in the middle no building is visible at all. Those few meters are the estate's gift.

03 · ROOMS

Does every room have an ocean view? Not at the lowest rate

Standard rooms are 32 square meters across the board, and every one of them has a balcony. That is generous for a 1983 building, and because each room faces outward, opening the curtain gives you either water or garden. What really changes the stay is the floor.

The lowest rate does not see water

The official site does not spell this out, but discounted packages sold by Okinawan agencies do. The lowest tier is assigned either to a Classic Twin with little or no sea visibility, or to a low floor room on the Nago Bay side, and requests are not accepted. In other words, the phrase "every room has an ocean view" does not hold at the bottom of the rate ladder. If the view matters, book a room type whose name actually contains Ocean View or Beach View.

Only one nightstand has an outlet. Several stay reports note that in twin rooms one bedside table has no power at all, while the other carries the phone, the light switches, and the socket. Two people charging phones at the same time means one of them is running a cable across the room. This is 1983 wiring logic, and the renovation did not touch it.

How to plan it

BookingWhether the room name contains Ocean View or Beach View is the only reliable signal. If it is absent, nothing is guaranteed.
FloorThe Coral Floor rooms on five and above are this hotel's value sweet spot, for reasons set out on page 5.
PackBring a short extension lead or a two port charger. It is the smallest piece of preparation here and the one you will feel most.

04 · BATHROOM

Tub and toilet share one room, the vanity sits outside

In standard rooms the tub and the toilet occupy the same enclosure, and there is no separate walk in shower. The vanity and makeup counter are set apart, in the corridor space outside the bathroom. Stay reports divide on this: some find the split circulation practical, others find showering and using the toilet in one cubicle cramped.

How to read thisThe combined tub and toilet follows from the 1983 column grid and plumbing risers rather than from cost cutting. Fitting a separate walk in shower into 32 square meters would mean moving structure. So the hotel has outsourced the act of soaking to the public bath on the ground floor, and uses a fee threshold of either zero or 1,000 yen to send you down there. Once that division of labor is clear, the in room bathroom stops being a flaw and becomes a supporting player.

BYREDO's Bal d'Afrique was launched in 2009, opening on bergamot and African marigold and closing on musk and cedar. This is not the clean and forgettable scent most hotels use. Two hours after a shower it is still there. Whether that appeals is personal, but it will follow you through the afternoon.

05 · FEES

Your floor decides what you pay: fixed costs beyond the room rate

From 1 July 2024 this hotel tied the parking fee and the public bath fee to the floor. Classic rooms on three and four pay for both. Rooms on five and above pay for neither. When the rate difference between them is smaller than the sum of those two items, the higher floor is simply the more comfortable choice.

Sources disagree on the service charge

Sources conflict, so confirm before booking. The hotel's own public bath page currently states that prices include a 15 percent service charge and 10 percent consumption tax. A February 2026 restaurant press release and page snapshots from the same period state 13 percent. The notice board carries a separate item titled service charge revision effective 1 April 2026. The most plausible reading is a move from 13 to 15 percent in April, but the hotel has not published the size of the change, so all three readings are presented here without adjudication.

The lodging tax has not startedOkinawa's lodging tax is the first prefecture level accommodation tax in Japan to use a percentage rather than a flat amount, and it begins on 1 February 2027. Anyone staying during 2026 is unaffected. From February 2027, two people in a 50,000 yen room will pay roughly 2,000 yen more for the night. The stated use of the money is specific: conservation of coral reefs and other natural assets, and improvement of tourism infrastructure.

How to plan it

ComparingAdd 1,000 yen for parking and 2,000 yen for two public bath entries to the third floor rate, then compare that against the fifth floor rate. The gap is often smaller than it looks.
DrivingIf only floors 3 or 4 are available, confirm on arrival whether parking is billed to the room or settled on the spot.
From 2027For stays from February 2027, build the lodging tax into the budget. Online travel agency display prices usually exclude it.

06 · PUBLIC BATH

What time does the public bath open? Three hours in the morning

The public bath sits on the ground floor of the main building, close to the lobby, so it is easy to find from any guest floor. It runs year round, but only in two windows, with six hours closed in between. It is the one facility here that requires you to look at a clock.

How the morning has to be ordered

Buffet breakfast runs until 10:30 AM. The public bath closes at 9:00 AM. If you want both, there is only one order that works: bathe first, eat second. Reversed, the bath door closes before you set down your coffee. The two schedules live on separate pages of the hotel's site, and the booking system does not flag the overlap.

The afternoon window opens at 3:00 PM, which lines up exactly with check in. Anyone arriving after a drive from the airport, or after 100 minutes on the limousine bus, will find that dropping the bags and going straight down feels better than heading for the pool first.

How to plan it

ArrivalCheck in at 3:00 PM and go down at 3:30 PM. This is the emptiest stretch of the day.
Next morningGo at 6:00 AM when the doors open. Change upstairs afterward and reach the restaurant by 8:00 AM.
With childrenFrom age 7 children enter the bath matching their gender. Settle that in the room, not at the changing room door.

07 · DINING

Where to eat breakfast: ten outlets and two closing days

IHG lists ten food and drink outlets here, counting bars and seasonal kiosks. That is a lot for a 400 room resort, though the number that opens reliably every day is closer to four or five. The rest depend on the season and the day of the week.

Breakfast runs on an online queue

The all day dining room uses an online waitlist for breakfast. You register, then receive an email when your turn comes. This does not appear on the booking page and is usually explained at check in. Peak in high season falls between 7:30 and 9:00 AM, and once registered you can wait in the room or the atrium rather than standing at the door.

The two closing days do not coincideUnkai closes on Tuesdays and Orchid closes on Mondays. For a two night stay where you want to eat at both, only certain date combinations work. Anyone arriving on a Monday cannot eat at Orchid that evening, and anyone arriving on a Tuesday cannot eat at Unkai. The reservation system shows this only after you click into each venue, so it is easier to check the weekday while booking the room.

With childrenOrchid's first seating starts at 5:30 PM with the show at 6:30 PM, which suits young children far better than the second.

08 · LOUNGE

What the club lounge includes: 6:30 AM to 10:30 PM, four services

The Club InterContinental lounge opened in June 2018 and is the largest single addition this resort has made in recent years. It faces the East China Sea, with a sweep that runs from Cape Manzamo across to Nago Bay, and it serves in four blocks with refreshment periods filling the gaps.

Why the private shower room mattersThis is a beach resort specific benefit. Checkout is 11:00 AM, but flights out of Naha are often in the evening. Anyone who wants one more swim after checking out can come back, rinse off, and change in the lounge rather than queueing at the beach changing rooms or waiting for the shuttle while still wet. It never appears at the top of a benefits list, yet it gets used more than most items on that list.

Take your time The lounge glazing faces west. Between September and March the sun sets behind the limestone cliff line of Cape Manzamo, and the natural turf on top of the cliff turns gold before dropping into silhouette. The whole thing takes about twenty minutes and asks nothing of you.

09 · THE SEA

Manza Beach and the water park that follows the tide

Manza Beach carries the top grade in the Ministry of the Environment's list of one hundred selected bathing beaches, an award held by only three places in Okinawa Prefecture. Coral reef rings the bay, so the water stays comparatively calm and the shallow zone is wide. The resort runs more than forty marine activities, and its best known one answers directly to the tide.

The tide is the timetable

Ocean Park closures have nothing to do with the weather and everything to do with the moon. One published example: on 4 July 2026 the park stopped from 2:30 to 6:00 PM for low tide, which left only the morning for anyone hoping to play that day. The hotel issues a day by day calendar each season and updates same day sea conditions on its site.

How to plan it

At check inTake a copy of the current Ocean Park calendar, find the closure hours for your two days, then build the rest of the schedule around them.
MorningLow tide tends to fall in the afternoon, so mornings usually carry the better odds.
WinterOcean Park is closed, but the garden pool is heated and the semi submarine and sunset cruise both run.

How to book: eight channels on the same night

Two things need stating plainly. First, online travel agency prices in New Taiwan dollars generally exclude local taxes and fees, while the advisor line above is a tax inclusive total. Those are different bases, and subtracting one from the other distorts the picture. Comparing the advisor room charge of 304.85 against the agency figures of 302 to 303 puts them on the same footing. Second, the Billabook line sits about 40 dollars lower, and gaps of that shape usually come from a different cancellation policy, room type, or payment timing, so read the terms before booking it.

Same room, same rate, with perks addedThis particular night illustrates the logic of the advisor channel cleanly. The room charge lands in the same band as the public best flexible rate, and the difference is the added 100 dollar property credit and daily breakfast for two. The value of two breakfasts is not the number on the bill. It is that you wake up and do not have to decide anything. The 100 dollar credit happens to cover a chef's selection dinner at Manza Grill, or afternoon tea for two plus a round at the pool bar.

Composite scores on the major booking platforms sit between 8.3 and 8.6, drawn from samples in the thousands. The scores are respectable, but the written comments split, and the dividing line falls almost entirely on one question: did you come expecting a new hotel or an old resort.

Reading both sides togetherAbout half the criticism follows inevitably from a forty year old building, and the other half is a gap in expectation. The pricing acknowledges as much: against comparable sea view rooms in Onna Village, this property sits clearly below the resorts that opened after 2018. What you buy is the position, the beach, the density of activities, and a garden that has actually grown in. What you give up is a current generation bathroom and a consistent set of circulation routes.

A distance table from the front door

Onna Village sits at the midpoint of Okinawa Island's west coast, roughly an hour from Naha to the south and an hour from the Motobu Peninsula to the north. That position is why it is the island's most common two night base.

Two other choices on the same coast

The Serakaki area gained two top tier resorts in quick succession: Hyatt Regency Seragaki Island Okinawa in 2018 and Halekulani Okinawa in 2019. Both are minutes away, both were built to current specifications in bathrooms, circulation, and room size, and both are priced accordingly. Set side by side, the three make a clean comparison: the same sea, three different decades of building logic.

For an itinerary running north, the Motobu Peninsula resorts sit closer to the aquarium. For a single night before a late flight, Naha city makes more sense. The case for this property rests on staying two nights or more and spending most of that time on the estate. One night spent mostly off site leaves its strongest asset untouched.

Whether to rent a carWalking distance from the hotel covers the beach and a handful of roadside shops. Cape Manzamo, the Blue Cave, and the aquarium all need a car. The limousine bus solves the airport transfer but not movement within the village. For two nights or more a car is the better call, and the reason is not cost. The beauty of this coast is on the road, and the drive along the western shoreline is itself part of the view.

Why the hotel stands on this side of the water

In 1726 the Ryukyuan king Sho Kei toured the grassland on the cliff opposite and said it was broad enough to seat ten thousand people. Mo means field in the Okinawan language, and that praise gave Cape Manzamo its name. Two centuries later the same grassland became a military communications site.

The answer is therefore simple. Anyone building a hotel on this coast in 1983 could not build on the Manzamo side, because the headland was still a base. Serakaki, across the inlet, was free. The hotel took the far shore and ended up with the better outlook, because the cliff line of Cape Manzamo can only be seen from opposite it.

Two matters without a conclusion

The rebuild. In December 2020 the Okinawa Prefectural Council for Nature Conservation disclosed a rebuilding scheme for this property: a new 150 room accommodation block, 11 villas, and a 75 room club block, 236 keys in total, built in stages over ten years, with the existing tower demolished once the new buildings are complete. The current building has a fifty year design life and had been in use for about forty years at that point. No public progress has been reported since, and no cancellation has been announced either. Sources are incomplete, so treat hotel announcements as authoritative.

Two power outages. The hotel has announced a temporary shutdown on 24 August 2026 for emergency maintenance of critical building equipment. It has separately announced a full property outage from midnight to 5:00 AM on 25 February 2027 for the statutory annual inspection of the incoming power equipment, which affects guests staying on the night of 24 February: lighting, air conditioning, elevators, sockets, Wi-Fi, and hot water all stop, and flashlights are placed in the rooms.

Take your time Onna Nabe was a ryuka poet of the early eighteenth century, a contemporary of Sho Kei, and she lived along this coast. Her best known verse asks the waves and the wind to fall quiet so that she may properly attend upon the king. Three hundred years later the same sea is still making the same sound in the same place.

This one gives you forty years of grown trees, a nationally graded beach, and a cliff line that only becomes visible from the far shore. Which of those you want depends on what this particular trip is for.
