Capella Bangkok Review: 101 Keys on the Chao Phraya

Most riverside hotels in Bangkok build upward and reserve the views for the top floors. Capella Bangkok does the opposite. Ten stories, 101 keys, a low block pressed against the Chao Phraya, and seven single story villas set directly on the riverbank. The World's 50 Best Hotels ranked it number one in 2024 and number three in 2025.

This guide covers one place per page, from the temple older than Bangkok itself that you pass on the way in, to sunrise yoga at the water. Most pages end with a short "how to plan it" note, though the point of this hotel is not a full schedule. It is the reason it gives you to stay put. Thirteen pages, about seventeen minutes.

The last page has a checklist of twelve things you can tick off. Most of them exist so you taste, soak in, or see something specific. Three of them are free and most guests never learn they exist. Take your time with it.

01 · The basics

One hundred and one keys, all of them turned toward water

Capella Bangkok sits at the southern end of the Chao Phraya Estate, with its entrance on Charoen Krung Road along the eastern bank of the river. The building rises only ten stories, the key count stops at 101, and seven of those keys are single story villas placed directly on the riverbank. There is another way to build on this stretch of water, which is to go tall and save the best rooms for the top. This hotel chose the opposite.

Here is the transport reality: no train stops here, so your first decision every morning is boat or car. The shuttle reaches ICONSIAM in about ten minutes and is one of the few ways to bypass Bangkok traffic entirely, but it runs on a headway rather than on demand. Taxis and ride hailing are inexpensive in Bangkok and put you almost anywhere in the city within fifteen to twenty minutes, although the evening rush is slow. Most guests end up using both.

One conflict to note before you book. Some guests report a midday break in the boat service, roughly 13:40 to 15:00, which does not appear in the official 07:00 to 22:00 window. Timetables get adjusted. Pick up the current one in the Living Room on arrival.

The logic behind itThe Crown Property Bureau leased 35.5 rai to CGD in one piece for 75 years. There is no second parcel of river land at this scale left in Bangkok, so the developer went low density: one residential tower to pay for it, two flagship hotels to give it a name, and gardens and a river promenade in between. The sense of space you feel here was bought with land area rather than designed into the plan.

How to plan it

Arrival dayTake a car straight from the airport, about forty minutes. Luggage and pier steps are a poor combination on a first visit.
On arrivalAsk the Living Room for the current boat timetable and the daily activity sheet. Those two pages shape the rest of your stay.
EveningsHeading into town, take the boat to Sathorn Pier and change to the BTS Skytrain. It beats waiting for a car on Charoen Krung.

02 · Public spaces

A frosted glass door cuts the hotel in half

Capella runs the same play at every property. The lobby is open to the public, and the other half of the hotel belongs to guests alone. In Bangkok you walk first into a public hall large enough to feel slightly excessive, with a view across a lily pond to the pool and the river beyond. Two reception desks sit at the back left, and beside them stands a frosted glass door. Your key card opens it, and that is where the hotel proper begins.

The Living Room is one long rectangular space with sofas, armchairs, and low tables mixed together, opening onto an outdoor terrace at one end. It works somewhere between a club lounge and a sitting room, but without the sittings and clearing that lounges impose. You can come down for coffee at seven in the morning or a drink at half past ten at night, and nobody asks you to move along in between. Capella calls its front office team Culturists, and they handle restaurant bookings, boat times, and directions.

The daily activity sheet arrives at check-in and the hotel calls the program Capella Moments. Contents rotate every day. Sunrise yoga at the river is the fixture, and the rota also brings Muay Thai in the riverside courtyard, early morning Pilates, and craft sessions such as painting a Khon mask (the carved mask worn in Thai classical dance drama) or a Lanna umbrella from the north. Families get a parallel program for children called Little Stars. All of it is free to guests.

Take your time The three o'clock trolley pours Thai iced tea and hands you a slice of egg cake, sweet without apology. Nothing in that hour has to be done, which is exactly why it exists. Sit on the terrace side. Boats pass one after another on the river, and you do not have to arrange a single thing.

03 · Rooms

Entry rooms are 61 square meters, but the river view depends on which one you book

This hotel has only two categories that are called rooms. Everything above them is a suite or a villa. Both room categories measure 61 square meters and both have a balcony with a daybed. The difference is height: Riverfront sits on the lower floors, and Riverfront Premier is fixed on levels five to ten. The marketing says every accommodation looks at the river. In practice, some Riverfront rooms look out over the resort pool and gardens instead.

The rooms feel generous. Circulation is wide, the closet runs nearly the length of the room, and the furniture is solidly built. That 61 square meter figure almost certainly includes the outdoor space, so the interior reads smaller than the number suggests. The palette is beige and pale wood, played safe. Some guests find it restful and others find it conservative for a brand whose Hanoi and Shanghai properties are theatrical to the point of spectacle. The television is mounted on a side wall, which makes for an awkward angle from the bed.

Human factorsEvery accommodation facing the river is the central promise here, so the official language uses the widest possible reading of it. The real dividing line is written into the category names. Anything with Premier is fixed on levels five to ten with a river view, while the entry level Riverfront and the 101 square meter Courtyard Suite may look at the pool. The pool view is a fine outlook in its own right, with the gardens, the water, and the evening lighting all on that side, but it is a different thing from what you pictured. Settle this at the moment of booking rather than at the front desk.

How to plan it

When bookingIf the river view matters, book Riverfront Premier or a suite with River in its name. The Courtyard Suite is a category larger and still looks at the pool.
After bookingWrite to the hotel asking for a high floor and a river outlook. A written request carries further than one made at the desk. If you booked through an advisor, hand this to them.
On arrivalStep onto the balcony first. Which way the daybed faces decides whether you will want breakfast out there.

04 · Bathrooms

A freestanding tub in the entry room

Plenty of five star hotels give the entry room a shower and hold the tub back as an upgrade. Here the 61 square meter Riverfront starts with double sinks, a freestanding tub, a separate walk-in rain shower, and the toilet in its own compartment. Sliding doors close the bathroom off from the bedroom completely.

Three sources disagree here. A stay report from April 2026 records Bamford toiletries and notes that alcohol and snacks were charged. The hotel website and several booking platforms describe complimentary snacks and non-alcoholic drinks, with toiletries by Bottega. The official package terms describe one complimentary non-alcoholic beverage per day. Brands and billing practices change, so confirm before you arrive.

Refillable containers are a group wide standard at Capella and follow the same logic as removing single use plastic. If something is missing you do not have to go downstairs. Call, and it arrives in the box outside your door, which suits anyone planning to be invisible for a day.

Why it works this wayLuxury hotels in Bangkok have split into two camps on bathrooms. One treats the tub as an upgrade incentive, the other fits one in every category. This hotel picked the second, and the cost of that decision is a large bathroom in every room, which is a large part of why the entry category needs 61 square meters. Stopping the key count at 101 sits on the other side of the same equation.

05 · Villas

Seven riverside bungalows inside the city

City hotels with villas are rare. City hotels with villas on a river are rarer still. Seven of them sit on the bank here, all at ground level, with folding glass doors that open onto a private garden, a plunge pool, and a daybed facing the water. The largest is the two bedroom Presidential Villa at 595 square meters.

Position matters among the seven. Guests who have stayed point out that the main staircase down to the river lands between villas three and four, so numbers one through three catch the most passing traffic. Six and seven are furthest from the entrance and the elevator and are the quietest, with seven sitting next to the Presidential Villa. Naming a number when you book is the most practical line on this page.

The airport transfer for villa guests is included rather than purchased. Guests describe the sequence as a staff member waiting at the aircraft door, an escort through immigration, and a Mercedes straight back to the hotel. After a long haul into Bangkok, that matters more than square meters. Two details live in the package terms rather than on the website: the fast track is capped at two people for a Villa and four for the Presidential Villa, and the limousine does not have to run to the airport, since a residence anywhere in Bangkok counts equally.

Take your time At six in the morning the cargo boats are already working the river and the villa garden is still quiet. Owning a patch of lawn in central Bangkok makes very little sense, and yet there it is. Get into the plunge pool and watch a barge cross in front of you. This is the stretch of time the hotel can offer and its neighbors cannot.

06 · Dining

Breakfast in a conservatory by the water

Phra Nakhon is the all day restaurant, built as a light filled conservatory with gardens around it and one side open to the river. The name belongs to the old town district of Bangkok. It is the only place in the hotel that serves breakfast, and the only dining outlet where dogs are allowed.

Breakfast reviews split sharply, and the reason is how you order. The buffet is small and its range is limited, so anyone who eats only from it comes away calling breakfast ordinary. Work through the tablet menu and the picture changes. The Thai column is the strength of the kitchen, and dishes like pad kra pao and mango sticky rice hold their level. Barista coffee is available, and so are whole coconuts opened to order.

A greenhouse in the garden grows organic herbs and vegetables for the restaurants. It appears in the hotel's sustainability notes, and it is also a corner you can walk to. Most guests only ever pass it.

How to eat breakfast here

Once seatedAsk for the tablet menu rather than heading for the buffet. The whole difference sits in that step.
The Thai columnPad kra pao and mango sticky rice make sense at breakfast. This is Bangkok.
If you have timeTake an outdoor table near the water. Sun on that terrace strengthens after ten, so earlier is more comfortable.

07 · Dining

Two Michelin stars, one cocktail bar, and a two day gap every week

Côte by Mauro Colagreco is the flagship restaurant. It took its first Michelin star in 2022, rose to two in 2025, and held two in 2026. It opens Wednesday through Sunday only. If your trip lands on a Monday or a Tuesday, that sentence is the most important one on this page.

Côte works the Riviera coastline from Nice to Genoa and lands it on a Bangkok riverbank. The room is bright, with a row of tables directly against the glass, and the light at lunch flatters it more than the light at dinner. In 2026 the restaurant helped the hotel take the number one Global Hotel for Food and Drink award from Food and Wine Global Tastemakers, which is a considerable result for a property with 101 keys.

Stella runs to the opposite extreme: dark, ornate, and theatrical. Its cocktail list is called Journey into the New Siam and folds Thai royal tradition into contemporary Bangkok. In 2025 the whole list travelled to Capella Singapore for a guest residency. On Thursday through Saturday there is live music, and those three nights feel different from the rest of the week.

How to arrange the meals

Once your stay is confirmedBook Côte first. Five service days a week and two Michelin stars means the table will not wait for you to arrive.
At lunchCôte costs less at lunch and the light is better. The four course menu is the sensible way in.
Thursday to SaturdayGo to Stella after ten. The live music nights carry the room.
Monday and TuesdayCôte is closed. Walk one minute to the Four Seasons, or ask a Culturist to book somewhere on Charoen Krung.

08 · Facilities

A 1,074 square meter spa, and a pool that never closes

Auriga Wellness was planned by GOCO Hospitality and covers 1,074 square meters with seven treatment rooms, two of them couples suites. It hides inside the gardens behind a modest entrance and only reveals its depth once you are through the door. The pool takes a different approach: one long rectangular infinity edge set above the river, open twenty four hours.

Access to the water facilities without a treatment is unusual and few hotels offer it. Most properties at this level tie the sauna, steam room, and vitality pool to a booking. Here they are open to every guest. Bangkok afternoons make very little argument for going outside, and two to four spent in there beats two to four spent under the air conditioning upstairs.

The pool is not large and it is not one of those rooftop skyline pools Bangkok does so well, which follows directly from a ten story building. What it has instead is water, trees, shade, and no closing time. Guests consistently report that it does not get crowded.

Take your time At eleven at night the pool is still lit and nobody is on the deck. Lights from the far bank shift across the surface and a boat passes now and then. A pool open twenty four hours means that no one will ever come to move you along. Swim or do not swim. Sitting on the edge with your feet in the water counts.

09 · Booking and fees

No award nights, but two routes that run in parallel

Capella is an independent group with no Marriott or Hyatt style award chart. Booking here runs on three tracks. The advisor channel, meaning Virtuoso, Fora Reserve, Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts and their equivalents, delivers upgrades, breakfast, and a property credit. The hotel packages deliver a free night or a discount. GHA DISCOVERY delivers a rebate on spending. The third runs alongside the other two without conflict. The first two need a question asked.

Advisor channel benefits	Upgrade on arrival subject to availability. Daily full breakfast for up to two guests per bedroom, served in the restaurant or through in-room dining. How to read thisOn a stay of three nights or more, the free night from Riverside Escape is almost certainly worth more than a USD 100 property credit, because it removes roughly a third of the room cost outright. On a two night stay the calculation flips, and the credit plus an upgrade usually beats an 18 percent discount. The question to settle is whether the two can be held together. Both the package terms and the advisor terms say they cannot be combined with other promotions, and hotels differ on whether that sentence refers to the same thing in both places. Have your advisor get a written confirmation from the hotel before you book. Nothing else settles it.

Two breakfasts a day is not really about the money. It means that when you wake up you do not have to decide anything. The restaurant is downstairs in the garden, the table is held, and you walk down and sit. The USD 100 property credit works the same way. Put it toward the four course lunch at Côte, priced around THB 3,800, and the two figures land in the same range.

11 · The neighborhood

The oldest paved road in Thailand, and the good part of it

The hotel opens onto Charoen Krung Road, completed in 1864 and the first paved road in Thailand. It was laid out under King Rama IV to serve the foreign consulates and trading houses that arrived after the Bowring Treaty opened Siam to Western commerce. The most interesting stretch of it today is not at the hotel gate. It is fifteen minutes to the north.

Next door	Wat Sutthiwararam. Originally Wat Lao, a temple dating to the Ayutthaya period, restored in 1885 under King Rama V at the request of Lady Sutthi, wife of Chao Phraya Wichian Siri, and renamed by the King. Your car passes it on the way in

An honest word first: the stretch of Charoen Krung directly outside the gate is not a place to walk. It carries traffic, the sidewalk is narrow, and it bakes in the afternoon. The walkable part starts near Soi 40 and runs north, and that is the creative quarter every guide has written about by now: old warehouses reworked into Warehouse 30, the design center inside the Grand Postal Building, murals down the side lanes, and beyond them the Chinese Thai quarter of Talat Noi. Ten minutes by car from the hotel, or fifteen on foot.

Talat Noi began with Portuguese settlers in the 1700s and was turned into a trading quarter by Chinese immigrants in the nineteenth century. Today it is a tangle of lanes, old houses, engine shops, and coffee bars. It sits close to the hotel and could hardly be further from it in character, and that contrast is part of what staying here buys you.

As for the Four Seasons next door, the two hotels share an owner and a plot yet were deliberately built as different things. One is a quiet riverside retreat, the other a busy urban resort. Crossing from one to the other takes a minute on foot, and having dinner on the other side is a choice only guests of this estate get to make.

12 · Hidden details

Four things a guest would not necessarily notice

One. The whole hotel is named after a single constellation

Capella is the brightest star in the constellation Auriga. The spa is called Auriga, the bar is called Stella, which is Latin for star, and the dining membership is The Constellation Club. Group materials add that the Auriga spa concept is built around lunar cycles. An entire naming scheme pulled down from the sky and laid over a hotel on a river, and none of it is apparent before you arrive.

Two. The land is leased, seventy five years at a time

The 35.5 rai of the Chao Phraya Estate belong to the Crown Property Bureau and were leased from 2019 for seventy five years, with 350 meters of river frontage. The parcel has been described as the last golden riverfront site in Bangkok, which explains why a developer was willing to put two flagship hotels and a 73 story residential tower on it at once. This hotel was first scheduled to open in 2013 and did not open until 2020, with the pandemic adding a final six months. You are staying in something that took seven years longer than planned.

Three. The entrance hides the river on purpose

The architects broke the building into three parts: the guest room block, a ground and first floor with courtyards, and a lower ground level with gardens, arranged on an E shaped plan. Coming in from Charoen Krung the river is completely screened from view, and you have to cross the lobby before the water appears. The concealment and the reveal are the point, and one walk through explains why the public hall was built so large.

Four. A second Capella address in Bangkok is already on the way

The group has announced Capella Residences Bangkok, 262 units at the corner of Sarasin and Langsuan Roads overlooking Lumpini Park, within the WellEra development. That is a completely different kind of address: far from the river, close to the trains. The same brand has given one city two opposite answers, one selling water and the other selling a park. The group itself is also changing hands at the top, with Roland Fasel appointed president of Capella Hotel Group in April 2026.
