Ritz-Carlton Okinawa Review: Breakfast, Lounge, and Booking

The Ritz-Carlton, Okinawa stands on a hilltop in Kise, Nago City, with 97 rooms and an eighteen-hole golf course wrapped around three sides of the site. The hotel closed completely on 16 April 2026 for a renovation and reopened on 17 July 2026. All three restaurants and the lobby lounge and bar were replaced, and one of them is entirely new.

This piece walks one place per page, from the sheet of water behind the front desk to the spa building on the far side of a bamboo tunnel. Several things here are true and easy to miss: there is no proper lunch service on property, Marriott Bonvoy Platinum status earns neither breakfast nor lounge access at this brand, and the window beside the bathtub looks onto the fairway. Thirteen pages, about thirty minutes.

The last page carries a checklist of twelve things you can tick off. Three of them cost nothing extra, most guests never do them, and all three are within walking distance of your room. Take them slowly.

01 · The basics

It sits on a hill, and not on the water

The drive from Naha Airport takes a little over an hour, the last three kilometers along Route 58, and then a turn uphill. One fact about the location has to come first: this hotel does not front the sea. It sits on high ground in Kise with the fairways of Kanehide Kise Country Club wrapped around three sides. The water is on the far side of the golf course, out across Nago Bay. All 97 rooms are described as ocean view, and that ocean is seen across green.

The awards have come thickly in the last two years: one key in the 2025 MICHELIN Keys for Japan, selection in the Best Beach, Island and Upcountry Hotels category of the Travel and Leisure Luxury Awards Asia Pacific 2026, the international Green Key environmental certification in June 2026, and the Forbes Travel Guide 2026 Verified Responsible Hospitality mark.

Start with the geographyFairways wrap three sides of the site, and everything else in this hotel follows from that. What it buys you is quiet, long views, and a green you can walk onto. What it costs you is sand, the sound of surf, and anything within walking distance. Decide which of those you want now, because the next twelve pages keep returning to it.

How to plan it

DrivingKyoda IC leaves you five minutes out, and this is the easy way in. If your rental is a minivan or a high-roof van, check the height first, since the garage stops at 2.2 meters.
No carDirect limousine services to the hotel are few. Check the current timetable once your flights are set, and if nothing lines up, ride to Kariyushi Beach or the Oriental Hotel and call the hotel before you board.
BookingCheck-out at 12:00 noon is unusually generous. On your last morning you will not have to give up the pool to make the deadline.

02 · Public spaces

A sheet of water, a bamboo tunnel, a building in between

The lobby is tall, white walled and red tiled. The form comes from Shuri Castle: Ryukyuan red roof tiles above walls of Ryukyuan limestone. Past the front desk lies a shallow reflecting pool the hotel calls the una, the word for the courtyard of the Ryukyuan royal palace. Two design motifs run through the whole building. One is the gusuku, the Okinawan castle. The other is the spring, a place where water rises out of the ground, long treated in Okinawa as sacred.

The circulation here is horizontal. The main building has only seven floors, but the site is spread out, and the restaurants, the outdoor pool, the library, the forest and the spa building fan away from the center. The unit of movement inside this hotel is therefore minutes rather than floors. The lobby to the spa building is about three minutes on foot, by way of that bamboo tunnel.

Take your time The water in the una has no fountain and no light show. By day it holds the sky, by night it holds the lamps. The space was built to do one thing, which is to let a person who has just arrived stand still and look for a moment. Stand in the same spot and do nothing at all, and you are already using it the way it was meant to be used.

03 · Rooms

Same 45 square meters, different floor

The 97 rooms fall into six categories. The smallest is 45 square meters, every room has a terrace, and every room has a bathtub. One step on the ladder here works differently from most hotels: the entry-level Deluxe Room and the Bay Deluxe Room above it are identical in area, both 45 square meters, and what separates them is the floor. Meanwhile the largest standard category, the Premier Deluxe at 58 square meters, sits on floors two through six and carries no guarantee of height.

The two top-floor suites face deliberately opposite ways. The western one takes the moon as its theme, with a headboard patterned after the marks night wind leaves on sand, and a design brief that cites the Kugani Udun, the golden hall that housed the royal family at Shuri Castle. The eastern one sells the sunrise and the morning birds. Same 105 square meters, same 270 degrees. What you are choosing is which end of the day you want.

How the ladder readsThe price steps here mostly buy height, and floor area is a secondary variable. The 54 Deluxe rooms occupy floors 1 to 4, and because the hotel itself stands on high ground they still see water, with a good share of the frame taken by trees and lawn. Open views start at the fifth floor. Space means Premier Deluxe. Stepping straight into the pool means a first-floor Cabana. In this building those three things do not arrive together.

How to plan it

For the viewBook Bay Deluxe or above outright. An upgrade out of a Deluxe depends on availability, and in high season that is a thin hope.
With childrenThere are only eight Cabana rooms and they fill early for the summer. Opening your door onto the pool means booking months ahead.
After bookingWrite and say whether floor or floor area matters more to you. Here those are two separate things, and unless you say so the hotel has to guess.

04 · Bathroom

Every room has a tub, and every room has that window

The good news first: booking a room without a bathtub cannot happen here. All 97 rooms carry a marble bathroom with a deep tub and a separate shower. Now the part the official site leaves out. Beside the tub is a large window facing outward, and what it faces is the golf course. Several guest accounts describe seeing players from the bath during the day, and being seen.

The window is a design decision rather than a construction fault. The whole premise of the building is to pull the green and the water indoors, and the bathroom therefore sits on the best-lit side of the room. The price is that a daytime bath asks you to decide where the blind goes. Trees and a grass slope separate the fairway from the rooms, so the distance is not small, but the line of sight is open, and more so on the lower floors.

Human factorsThere is a small action here that recurs every single day: open the blinds in the morning for the view, close them at night for the bath. You will operate blinds more often than at most hotels, and the bathroom and the sleeping area usually run on separate tracks. On arrival, pull each set once and note which cord belongs to which pane, and you will not have to think about it again for the rest of the stay. Guest accounts also mention that the lavatory in a Deluxe room sits behind one of two doors, which is easy to get wrong the first time, and which comes from the same set of design decisions.

05 · Breakfast

Where breakfast happens, and who pays for it

Breakfast happens in one place, the Okinawan restaurant Dining Gusuku, from 7:00 am to 10:30 am, with seating indoors and on a terrace. Gusuku is the Okinawan word for castle. One thing has to be said before anything else: The Ritz-Carlton brand does not offer the Marriott Bonvoy elite breakfast benefit. At most brands a Platinum, Titanium or Ambassador member can select breakfast as the welcome gift. At The Ritz-Carlton that option does not exist.

In the evening the same room turns Okinawan. Since the July 2026 renovation, Gusuku has made shabu-shabu its signature, and the three-part selection covers prefectural fish, prefectural agu pork and prefectural Kuroge wagyu. The course opens with sashimi of local fish, closes with Okinawa soba, and finishes on a chilled mango yokan. A la carte the kitchen also runs handmade jimami peanut tofu, Okinawa soba and stone-grilled taco rice. A sanshin player performs at dinner.

The structural consequenceNinety-seven rooms share one breakfast room for three and a half hours. In accounts from before the renovation, waiting to be seated and the rhythm of service drew the most consistent criticism of the whole property. The two peaks usually fall between 8:00 am and 9:30 am. For a quiet table, the windows are 7:00 to 7:45 and anything after 9:45. Terrace seats run out sooner, and the door onto that terrace opens and closes often enough to change the temperature at nearby tables.

How to plan it

7:00 amThe first half hour after opening is the emptiest, and the egg station has no line.
TerraceAsk for it as you walk in. There are few terrace tables and they go first.
Before bookingConfirm whether your rate includes breakfast. This brand will not cover it with status, and that is the single easiest thing to misread about this hotel.

06 · Dinner

Two restaurants, one time slot, an entirely new menu

Since 17 July 2026 the dinner options number three: the teppanyaki restaurant Kise, the new Italian restaurant Riva Ristorante, and Okinawan dining at Gusuku. All three run from 5:00 pm to 9:30 pm. The former Italian restaurant, Chura Nu Uji, has closed, and some pages of the official site still carry the old name in their descriptions. Book by the current name.

The whole food and beverage operation is new, which is both the appeal and the risk. In July 2026 the kitchen changed its executive chef, its restaurants and its menus at the same time, and it has been open for under a month. A new kitchen usually takes some months to settle. Keep that in mind when reading reviews written after August 2026: what you are reading may be a shakedown period or may be a settled operation, and a single review rarely tells you which.

Take your time The tableware at Kise was commissioned piece by piece from Ryukyuan craftspeople, down to the chopstick rests and the tea. Teppanyaki moves slowly by design, one dish at a time, with gaps in between. The gaps are there so you can turn the cup in your hand over and look at the underside.

07 · Lobby lounge

At noon, one room in the hotel is open

Line up the three restaurant schedules and a gap appears. Kise opens at 5:00 pm, Riva opens at 5:00 pm, and Gusuku clears breakfast at 10:30 am and returns at 5:00 pm. What is left in the middle is the Lobby Lounge and Bar, 11:00 am to 11:00 pm, plus 24-hour in-room dining. The nearest convenience store is a drive away, so lunch is a decision you make in advance.

The other way to fill the middle of the day is the Club Lounge, which at The Ritz-Carlton has to be purchased with the rate and is not covered by Bonvoy status. The lounge runs five presentations a day: breakfast 7:00 to 10:30 am, light lunch 11:30 am to 1:30 pm, afternoon tea 2:30 to 4:30 pm, hors d'oeuvres 5:30 to 7:30 pm, and cordials 8:00 to 10:00 pm. The Club concierge works 7:00 am to 10:00 pm, and the package also carries pressing of five garments per night, continued use of the lounge after check-out, and transport to nearby areas.

The structural consequenceThis hotel runs two different days. Guests who bought the lounge have five sittings covered and never meet the noon gap at all. Guests who did not have three options at midday: the lobby lounge, the picnic basket, and in-room dining, and the basket has to be ordered the night before. That difference comes from staffing and floor space, it is settled at the moment of booking, and no amount of service recovery changes it.

How to plan it

The night beforeOrder the picnic basket if you want lunch outdoors. It can go to the outdoor pool, the forest path or the beach.
MiddayIf you would rather decide on the day, the lobby lounge opens at 11:00 am and faces the water.
Going outTen minutes by car brings you to Nago and the places along Route 58, which beats holding out on property.

08 · Spa and pools

Through the bamboo tunnel, the rules change

The indoor pool, the gym, the heat facility and the treatment rooms are none of them in the main building. They occupy a separate two-story structure reached by a garden path and a bamboo tunnel, about three minutes on foot, with a buggy available in the rain. Once you are through that door a different set of rules applies, and there is more than one of them.

The Ritz-Carlton Spa Okinawa	Daily 9:00 am to 9:00 pm, reservation required, on +81 980-43-5691. A credit card is registered at the time of booking
Arrival	The spa asks you to arrive an hour before your treatment to complete a consultation card and use the facilities. Late arrivals have their treatment time shortened

The age rules come in three layers and they do not agree with one another. Under-16s may use the indoor pool but only until 5:00 pm and only with an adult. The gym, the treatment rooms, the changing rooms, the heat facility and the relaxation area are all 16 and over. The spa terrace and the Spa Cafe carry no age restriction at all. For a family traveling with teenagers, those three lines shape the whole afternoon.

The bamboo tunnel takes a little over a minute to walk and it is the quietest stretch on the property. Bamboo overhead, banyan and shell ginger on both sides, and the sound changes the moment you enter. Very few people walk those three minutes slowly.

09 · Booking

The two things status will not give you here

The Ritz-Carlton is an exception inside Marriott Bonvoy. At most brands, Platinum members and above can take breakfast as their welcome gift, and at The Ritz-Carlton they cannot. At most brands, Platinum members and above receive lounge access automatically, and at The Ritz-Carlton the Club Lounge has to be bought with the rate. Even the Guaranteed Room Type benefit excludes this brand. This page is about those two gaps and the channels that close them.

Bonvoy Platinum and above receive	Welcome gift of points or a food and beverage amenity, an upgrade subject to availability, late check-out, and 50 percent bonus points
Bonvoy does not cover	Breakfast, which the brand does not offer at any tier; Club Lounge access, which requires a lounge rate; Guaranteed Room Type, from which the brand is excluded
Marriott STARS	This property is on the STARS list. The amenities are daily breakfast for two, a 100 US dollar hotel credit once per stay, an upgrade subject to availability, early check-in and late check-out subject to availability, a personalized welcome amenity, an in-person welcome from hotel management with a note from the general manager, and Guardian Angel service with a four-hour response
How that credit works	It applies to incidental spend incurred during the stay, including dining, spa services and hotel recreational activities not run by a third party. It cannot be applied to the room rate, tax, gratuities, service charges or third-party services. What people liked, and where they were disappointed

First the scale: about 970 reviews on Tripadvisor, ranked first of 21 hotels in Nago, rated 4 out of 5. Below, the two sides are listed separately, drawn from published stay accounts and booking platform reviews. One caveat matters: anything written before 17 July 2026 describes the old restaurants and the old lobby, and as of August 2026 there are very few accounts of the renovated property.

Praised repeatedly

Service. This is the most consistent item, and several long-term repeat guests name it as the reason they return
Quiet. High ground plus a ring of fairways gives an entirely different sound floor from a beachfront resort
The scale of the public spaces. The tall lobby, the una water court and the forest path come up again and again
Rainy days work here. Heated indoor pool, heat facility, spa and library are all under cover, which counts for a lot in a place with this much rain and this many typhoons
How quiet the Club Lounge is. Weekday accounts usually describe the other guests as quiet too
Check-out at noon, with a good number of accounts reporting late check-out granted to 2:00 pm

Disappointing repeatedly

No beach. This is the most structural complaint of them all. The neighboring Busena headland has sand and this property does not

How to read this setThe praise clusters on people and setting. The criticism clusters on terrain and layout. The first can be maintained through training and the second cannot be changed at all. That also explains how one hotel produces both a fifth return visit and a ruined honeymoon in the same review feed: guests who came for service usually leave satisfied, and guests who came for an Okinawan beach holiday often do not. Working out which of those you are is more useful than counting stars.

The sea is next door, the theme park is over the hill

This stretch of coast is denser than it looks. Within a kilometer of the hotel sit two other large resorts, within two kilometers two beaches, and within a thirty to fifty minute drive both the Churaumi Aquarium and JUNGLIA, the theme park that opened in 2025. Because the hotel has no sand of its own, the first item on this page is how to reach the water.

Beaches	The hotel has no private beach. In summer it sets aside a guest-only stretch at Kise Beach, about five minutes by hotel shuttle, with complimentary beach chairs and parasols. The restrooms, shop and lifeguards at that beach are run by the neighboring Kise Beach hotel. Kise Beach is 2.0 kilometers away and Koki Beach 3.0 kilometers. Beach fees follow each beach's own policy, and past accounts note that they are settled at the beach rather than charged to the room
Shuttle	Beaches within a five minute drive can be reached by complimentary hotel transport, which has run as a tuk-tuk, with towels, water and a phone to call for the return

The place where water comes out of the ground

The hotel states its design motifs plainly: the red tiles and white walls of Shuri Castle, and a place where water rises from the ground, long held sacred in Okinawa. The second one sounds like marketing copy, and on this particular piece of land it has a documentary basis. In the local record, Kise is best known as the rice basket of the Nago area.

Kise	At the southwest edge of Nago City, facing Nago Bay to the north with hills to the south. It divides into 14 named sub-districts. The Majafukuji and Maja rivers merge partway down into the Kise River and empty into Nago Bay. Route 58 runs through the settlement
Paddy field place names	Kise has long been called a rice basket, and many of its sub-district names refer to wet fields, among them Pukujii, Upusuu, Hoochi and Meenaasuu. Majaa, south of the settlement, was fertile paddy
Upunaasuu	A seedbed area of roughly one chobu, about 3,000 tsubo, where the whole village kept its rice nurseries in plots of 20 to 30 tsubo each
Semiya	The old center of the settlement around the community hall, holding a kami-asagi ritual shelter and a nurudunchi, the residence of the village priestess. The settlement is said to have moved down from the foot of Shigamamui
Iimaa and Hamabata	The grid of houses that grew along Route 58 between the Taisho and Showa eras is called Iimaa. The seaward part north of the road is called Hamabata

Set those facts in order and a sequence appears. Kise lived on water, and the value of its paddy came from what ran down the hills and rose out of the ground. In 1970, two years before Okinawa reverted to Japan, the underwater observation tower went up on the headland next door and tourism began to arrive. In 2000 a summit brought heads of government to the same headland. In 2007 a hotel was built on this hilltop, and in 2012 it took the Ritz-Carlton name. In 2025 the golf course over the hill became a theme park.

The name Bankoku Shinryo comes from the inscription on a bell hung at Shuri Castle in 1458, and means a bridge among ten thousand nations. Ryukyuan castles served chiefly to receive Chinese envoys, with defense only one of their functions, which is why the courtyards were large and the roofs meant to be seen. This building turned that courtyard into a sheet of water and put it in front of you at the door. What it borrowed is less the shape than the function: to let someone who has traveled a long way stand still and look for a while.

Take your time The grass on those fairways is seashore paspalum, which tolerates salt, drought and traffic, and which coastal courses adopt for exactly that reason. The green you see from your window has a color and a texture unlike the courses on the main islands. It grows here for the same reason this land grew rice three hundred years ago. The water and the soil are what they are.
