The Westin San Diego Bayview stands at 400 West Broadway. It was completed in 1991 with 25 floors and 436 rooms around a full height atrium, and it finished a 20 million US dollar renovation in 2024, which also changed its name by adding the word Bayview.

It has a rooftop pool, a complimentary airport shuttle, and one thing many guests discover only on arrival: after one in the afternoon there is no restaurant open on the property. This guide walks one place per page, lays out every one of those time windows, and works one night out along the way. About thirty minutes of reading.

The final page carries a tickable experience list of twelve things. One of them is already paid for by the nightly fee, and most guests never realise they hold that ticket. Work through them slowly.

01 · The basics

The courthouse hotel downtown

Start with the location. The corner of Broadway and Columbia is the administrative and judicial core of downtown San Diego, with the federal courthouses, the county Hall of Justice and the state court all inside two blocks. This building stands on that corner, four blocks north of the water and a few minutes west of the Gaslamp.

Read the pet line carefully. The charge here is 50 US dollars per night rather than once per stay. Four nights comes to 200 US dollars, which is more than the one off charge at most hotels in this city. Anyone travelling with a dog should multiply before comparing.

02 · Public spaces

A 1991 atrium, still running

The thing worth looking at here is the hole in the middle rather than any guest room. The atrium hotel was the standard American urban format through the 1980s and 1990s: lifts hung on the wall, corridors turned into balconies, a lobby opened all the way to the roof. Almost nobody builds that way now, because that volume can be sold as floor area instead.

What follows structurallyAn atrium looks good and also works as a sound chamber. Banquets, group check ins and luggage being wheeled at dawn all carry upward through the void, and a substantial share of the 436 rooms open onto it. That is manageable at the booking stage: ask for a room type facing outward with a window view, and keep the atrium for the walk past. It also explains why the rate ladder here is graded by city view against bay view, because orientation is the real difference in this building.

Which room to book at the Westin San Diego Bayview｜it comes down to which way the window faces

All 436 rooms were renovated in 2024, and the signature of that work is the cork panelled headboard wall. The ladder is simple: city view or bay view first, then floor height, then bed type. Floor areas are quoted as ranges like 255 to 390 square feet, because each bay really is different.

What follows structurallyFive suites in 436 rooms is the lowest ratio in this series, and the consequence is that upgrade inventory is thin. Whatever channel you book through, what you are likely to get is a better orientation within the same size band rather than a move into a suite. So at this hotel the sentence "bay view, high floor please" is worth far more than "please upgrade me". For one night on 8 October, the entry city view room is 279 US dollars before tax and the bay view is 289, a difference of 10, and the high floor bay view is also 289. Ten dollars for the whole bay is the best single trade in this guide.

How to plan around it

Showers only, no tubs

One thing on this page matters more than the rest. Client reviews agree that the rooms here have a shower and no tub, and several marked the hotel down for it. Removing tubs during a renovation is common in buildings of this generation, because a shower takes less floor area and the waterproofing is simpler.

The accessible pool deserves its own note. Making a rooftop pool accessible means the lift, the roof deck and the poolside route all have to connect, which was not a given in a 1991 building. Listing it on the amenity sheet gives you something concrete to ask about when booking.

Three questions to ask before booking

05 · Pool and fitness

The pool is outdoors on the roof, with a whirlpool beside it. What makes it distinctive is the setting: this is the administrative quarter, so what surrounds you is twenty storeys of glass curtain wall in every direction. You cannot photograph that at a resort.

Worth taking slowly The value of a rooftop pool is not in the pool. At four or five in the afternoon there are still several thousand people working in the towers around you, and you are lying beside water directly above them with nothing at all to do. That contrast does not exist at a beach resort, because everybody there is on holiday too. A downtown pool offers something very specific, and it only works because somebody nearby is still at their desk.

06 · Dining

Westin San Diego Bayview restaurants｜there is no dinner service here

This is the single most useful thing to know before arriving. Coast, the restaurant, runs 06:00 to 13:00 daily. Aroma Cafe, the coffee bar, runs 06:00 to 13:00 daily. After one in the afternoon the only thing open is The Bar, until eleven at night. A 436 room hotel with no dinner restaurant.

What follows structurallyClosing both restaurants at one o'clock is a deliberate operating decision. The guests here spend the day in court, in meeting rooms or at the convention centre, and they go out in the evening. For a business traveller that is entirely rational. For a first time visitor it can be a surprise, since most four star hotels keep at least one room open for dinner. Two things follow. Dinner has to happen off site, and the Gaslamp is a few minutes east. And if the flight lands late, what remains inside the building is The Bar and room service. Plan for both and the stay matches expectations.

Four figures, and no two match

Meetings and groups are the main revenue here, and the size of the event space is given as four different numbers by four different sources. This page puts all four side by side without adjudicating, because anyone planning an event needs to see the actual spread rather than one figure picked out of it.

What follows structurallyAmong the four figures, the 26,044 square feet across 15 rooms comes from trade coverage published when the renovation completed, and it is both the most detailed and the most recent, which makes it the most credible. The two figures in the 21,000 range may exclude outdoor space or rooms added in the renovation, and Marriott's "more than 30,000" reads as a marketing round number. Anyone running an event has only one move: ask the sales desk for current floor plans and a room by room schedule. For a leisure guest, the point of this page is that the rate calendar follows the trade show calendar, so checking what is on downtown beats checking a price comparison site.

This page takes one night apart, and one thing has to be said about the sample first. On 1 October 2026, the date used throughout this series, this building had exactly one room type left in the booking system, at 308 US dollars before tax and 386 including it. To build a full rate table, a second sample was taken for 8 October, one night, two adults, checked on the same day, 23 August 2026.

Check the arithmetic yourself

The formula is rate × 1.16 plus about 28.8 US dollars. The entry room: 294.00 multiplied by 1.16 gives 341.04, plus 28.77 is 369.81, and the system displays 369.81. The bay view: 304.00 multiplied by 1.16 gives 352.64, plus 28.77 is 381.41, displayed as 381.41. All three advisor quotes match exactly, and the six rounded public quotes all pass the check as well.

The sample here spans only 10 US dollars, so the multiplier is less precise than elsewhere in this series. What matters is that 1.16 agrees with the 15.99 percent derived at two other downtown properties, which is a useful cross check. The fixed portion of about 28.8 corresponds to the published 25 US dollar daily destination fee plus tax; dividing 28.8 by 25 gives 1.152, which differs from the multiplier applied to the room, and the official pages do not explain why. This site does not adjudicate.

What follows structurallyA 25 US dollar destination fee is low for downtown, and one item inside it converts directly into money: one USS Midway Museum ticket per room per stay. That is one of the busiest paid attractions in San Diego and the adult admission is higher than the fee itself. If the Midway was already on your list, the 25 dollars pays for itself the same day, and the airport transfer, the bicycles and the snack hour all come on top. Most guests never realise they hold that ticket, because it sits on the last line of the fee description.

One observation about supply

On 1 October, the date used across this series, this building had one room type left to book, while the other properties in the series still showed ten or more. That points to concentrated demand downtown on that date. For an early October stay downtown, booking early is worth more than choosing a room type.

Work these out before you book

LUMINOUS: the version that costs 15 dollars more

This hotel books through Marriott LUMINOUS rather than STARS. LUMINOUS is the advisor channel Marriott runs for its non luxury brands, with one perk fewer than STARS and usually a far smaller price gap. For one night on 8 October, LUMINOUS opens at 294 US dollars and the Bonvoy member rate at 279. A gap of 15 US dollars.

Turning 15 dollars into things

Pay 15 more and receive daily breakfast for two plus a shot at an upgrade. Breakfast at Coast is rated well in client reviews and two covers are worth clearly more than 15 dollars, so the sum works at any length of stay. That is the opposite of the previous guide: at The US Grant the advisor rate ran 113 US dollars above the member rate and had to be earned back through a one off 100 dollar credit, which got worse the longer you stayed. Same group, same city, same day of enquiry, and the advisor channel arithmetic differs by a factor of seven.

Where the advisor channel actually pays at this hotel

In the breakfast and the orientation. As page 3 explains, there are five suites in the building, so an upgrade delivers a bay view and a high floor, and that is precisely what this hotel sells. Add that nothing on the property serves a full meal after one in the afternoon and breakfast carries more weight here than it does elsewhere. The Fora system holds 2 advisor reviews, both recommending the property, and clients score it 4.7 across 15 reviews. Praise concentrates on cleanliness, service and breakfast. Criticism concentrates on the missing tubs and the size of the pool, and both of those are decided by the structure.

How to read these reviewsBoth major criticisms are permanent. The tubs went in the 2024 renovation and the decision applies to the whole hotel; the pool is sized by the roof area available in 1991. Both are visible before you book, and something visible before booking is not a surprise. What does move over time is the road works and the lobby construction, so a review from six months ago is not a description of today. As for the traffic through the building, that is the arithmetic of 436 rooms plus fifteen or sixteen event spaces, and asking for an outward facing room handles most of it.

This quarter is the administrative and judicial core of San Diego. A federal courthouse stands diagonally opposite, the county Hall of Justice is on the next block, and two blocks further there is a second federal courthouse and the state court. By day these are the most suited streets in the city, and they empty quickly in the evening.

The two words that were added

When the 20 million US dollar renovation finished in 2024, the name changed from The Westin San Diego Downtown to The Westin San Diego Bayview. Those two extra words are not decoration. They moved the selling point from where the building stands to what it looks at, and that decision runs all the way down to which room you should book.

Worth taking slowly If you land a bay view room on a high floor, leave the curtain half open before you sleep. The office towers downtown go dark floor by floor after ten, and the lights on the bay side never go out, because that side is a working port. The two rhythms are completely different, and ten minutes of watching tells you what this city runs on. It is the one moment those two extra words in the name are genuinely delivered, and it costs nothing.
