Luxury Collection vs Autograph vs Tribute Portfolio | Marriott's Three Collection Brands Compared

In Kyoto, a hotel bath is fed by a hot spring beneath the building, across the street from Nijo Castle. In Tokyo, more than 200 cherry trees fill the garden outside a tower near Shinagawa Station. In Milan, DJs play in a hotel courtyard a short walk from the central station. All three are Marriott hotels, and none of them carries the Marriott look.

They belong to Marriott's three collection brands: The Luxury Collection, Autograph Collection and Tribute Portfolio. Each hotel keeps its own name and character; the brand sets a level and a mood. Thirteen pages, about thirty-five minutes: what each one feels like, where each is strongest, the Asian hotels to plan around, and how to book them. Who they suit less, up front: travelers who want the same room and the same routine in every city.

The last page has a checklist of twelve things to try at any of the three. Three cost nothing. One of them is asking the front desk what the hotel itself is known for, which is how you find the detail each brand is built around.

01 · THE SHORT ANSWER

History, character or a lively lobby: pick the trip first, then the brand

The three brands share one idea: Marriott adds independent hotels without renaming them. They split by level and mood. The Luxury Collection is Marriott's luxury tier, with hotels that lean on a city's history. Autograph Collection sits one level down and picks hotels with a single strong signature. Tribute Portfolio, the same level as Autograph, favors design-led hotels where the lobby and bar are the center of the stay.

On December nights in Tokyo, an advisor booking was US$412 a night at a Luxury Collection hotel and US$388 at an Autograph hotel, each with perks on top of the room. 02 · THE LUXURY COLLECTION

Hotels that carry a city's history, and let you sleep inside it

The brand traces itself to CIGA, an Italian hotel company founded in 1906 to serve travelers to Venice. Marriott describes Luxury Collection hotels as places that "define the destination," and in Asia that often means a former estate, a castle view or a building with a past.

Scene Kyoto, opposite Nijo Castle. HOTEL THE MITSUI opened in late 2020 on the land where the Mitsui family once kept its residence. Guests walk in through the Kajiimiya Gate, more than 300 years old and restored with about 80 percent of its original parts. Below the building, a spring feeds the hotel's onsen, kept at about 40 °C.

1992 or 1994Wikipedia dates the brand to January 1992, when ITT Sheraton grouped 28 hotels and 33 Sheraton Towers as a "Luxury Collection." The brand's own page says CIGA became The Luxury Collection in 1994.

Worth slowing down for The Mitsui gate was registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan in July 2021, after the hotel opened. The oldest thing on the property is the first thing every guest walks through.

03 · AUTOGRAPH COLLECTION

One hotel, one signature you remember after you leave

A guest room with a wood ceiling, a daybed and floor-to-ceiling windows over the Osaka skyline and river
A guest room at THE OSAKA STATION HOTEL, Autograph Collection, official gallery.

Autograph launched on January 26, 2010, with seven hotels from the Kessler Collection in the United States, including Casa Monica in St. Augustine. Its line is "Exactly Like Nothing Else," and since 2024 each hotel names its own signature moment, which the brand calls The Mark.

Scene THE OSAKA STATION HOTEL opened on July 31, 2024, on the site of Osaka's first railway station. The lobby uses red brick that recalls the 1874 station. Guest rooms run from the 30th to the 38th floor, restaurants sit on the 29th, about 140 meters up, and a bar waits behind a door marked "Stationmaster's Office."

The same reviewer found Osaka's public areas a little plain. Advisors in the Fora Portal disagree on that point: one recommends taking a drink to the lobby armchairs just for the view.

04 · TRIBUTE PORTFOLIO

Design you notice, and a lobby where people stay

Starwood launched Tribute Portfolio on April 16, 2015, as its tenth brand, with five hotels and the tagline "Stay Independent." Marriott later described it as an indie spirit that comes to life "through captivating design and vibrant social spaces." The rooms tend to be smaller; the public spaces carry the stay.

Scene Milan, a ten-minute walk from Centrale. Duo Milan Porta Nuova, renovated in 2023, has 239 rooms, terrazzo floors and sculptural lighting. People work in the lobby by day; the Michelin Guide notes DJ sets in the courtyard, and the hotel lists a top-floor Peruvian lounge serving cocktails until late.

05 · ARRIVAL AND SERVICE

How each brand looks after you

None of the three has a brand-wide service ritual like a butler or a Club Level. The service style comes from the hotel, so the advisor and guest reviews below are the best guide.

Luxury CollectionMitsui Kyoto, from Fora advisor reviews: check-in in a tea lounge, a small pillow gift each night, staff who remember names. Forbes Travel Guide has rated it Five-Star five years running, according to the hotel
AutographPrince Sakura Tower, from advisor and client reviews: nightly turndown with ice, carp feeding and bell ringing in the garden, a spa with whirlpool and sauna, free massage chairs. Osaka: a concierge who walked a guest to the room and gave restaurant ideas for Kyoto
TributeDuo Milan, from advisor reviews: smooth check-in, welcome treats, and a team that took in a group of guests at the last minute when their hotel closed
Make the most of itCollection hotels each do one or two things very well, and the staff know what they are. Ask at check-in what the hotel is known for: the garden lighting in Tokyo, the onsen hours in Kyoto, the courtyard nights in Milan. Then plan one evening around it.
How to plan it
  • Before arrivalSend the occasion and your interests. Through an advisor, the note goes to the hotel with the booking.
  • At check-inAsk about the signature experience and whether it needs a reservation.

06 · ROOMS AND DESIGN

What you see when the door opens

A room restyled around the 1928 Olympics at Apollo Hotel Amsterdam, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, official gallery.

Room size follows the tier. The Asian Luxury Collection and Autograph hotels below start around 36 to 46 square meters; Tribute rooms in European cities can be half that. What sets each room apart is the view or the design.

How to plan it
  • Spring in TokyoFor the Sakura Tower in blossom season, request a north-facing room; Forbes suggests booking about a year ahead.
  • KyotoAt Mitsui, price a garden-view room against the entry category.
  • MilanAt Duo, compare the larger Le Varesine rooms (21 m²) if you travel with big luggage.

07 · DINING AND BARS

Where to eat and drink, brand by brand

A high-floor lounge with brick columns, a curved counter and tall windows over the city
A lounge at THE OSAKA STATION HOTEL, Autograph Collection, official gallery.

The pattern holds here too: Luxury Collection hotels bring in names from outside, Autograph hotels build a place you will not find elsewhere, and Tribute hotels put the bar where everyone can see it.

In Kaohsiung's Asia New Bay Area, THE AMNIS opened as the first Luxury Collection hotel in Taiwan, with 147 rooms of about 60 square meters. Guests are welcomed with longan blossom honey tea. In the hotel, Ukai-tei serves teppanyaki in its first location outside Japan.

The Asian cities where you can choose between them

Japan has the deepest mix of the three. Taiwan has one Luxury Collection hotel and two Tribute hotels, and no Autograph hotel that we could find.

TaiwanLuxury Collection: THE AMNIS, Kaohsiung (THE AMNIS Kaohsiung, hotel guide). Tribute: Madison Taipei on Dunhua South Road; Suz & Catorze Taipei by the Tamsui River in Wanhua. Do: sunset at the harbor in Kaohsiung

NaraLuxury Collection: Shisui, one Michelin Key
HokkaidoTribute: The Kiroro, the brand's first hotel in Asia. Do: a ski week
How to plan it
  • TaiwanKaohsiung for a Luxury Collection weekend; Taipei for a Tribute city stay.
  • JapanMix them on one trip: Autograph in Tokyo or Osaka, Luxury Collection in Kyoto (page 12).
  • SeasonsCherry blossom and autumn weeks fill first in Tokyo and Kyoto.

09 · SAME-DAY RATES

Same December nights: what each brand costs through an advisor

Checked in the Fora Advisor Portal on October 28, 2026, for December 13 to 16, 2026: three nights, two adults, one room, in US dollars. Tokyo gives a clean comparison, because both hotels belong to the same Prince group. Tribute has no Tokyo hotel in this sample, so Milan stands in.

Luxury Collection, TokyoThe Prince Gallery Tokyo Kioicho, Superior King, 36 m². STARS rate: US$412 a night, US$1,571 for three nights with taxes. This line is the hotel's own longer-stay offer and includes Wi-Fi and a welcome amenity, on top of STARS perks
Autograph, TokyoThe Prince Sakura Tower Tokyo, Deluxe King, 46 m². LUMINOUS rate: US$388 a night, US$1,454 for three nights with taxes. This line lists a US$100 hotel credit and 5,000 bonus points; a separate LUMINOUS promotion for three nights or more lists a US$200 credit at the same price
Tribute, MilanDuo Milan Porta Nuova, Gioia Queen, 14 to 15 m². LUMINOUS rate: US$180 a night, US$699 for three nights with taxes, with the hotel's stay-three offer

Rates change daily and offers have their own terms. The numbers show the size of the gap between brands, not a fixed price. The direct Bonvoy rate for the same room is a separate route with its own inclusions, covered on the next page.

For the same Tokyo nights, the Autograph hotel gave a larger room for US$24 less a night; the Luxury Collection hotel gave a 36th-floor lobby and Forbes Five-Star service. 10 · HOW TO BOOK

Same night, same room: what each way of booking includes

The Luxury Collection is a Marriott STARS brand, so every hotel adds a fixed set of perks to an advisor booking. Autograph and Tribute use Marriott LUMINOUS, which applies only at hotels that join it; all three hotels checked on page 9 do.

Full disclosure: I book hotels as a Fora advisor, and the hotel pays me a commission on advisor bookings. That is why the first route on this list is points, booked by you.

How to plan it
  • Points firstCheck the award price before anything else. If it beats cash, book it yourself.
  • Read the rateAt LUMINOUS hotels, the credit appears in the rate name or not at all. Ask before you book.
  • Spend the creditAsk on arrival where it applies; the restaurant or bar is the usual choice.

11 · WHO SHOULD PICK WHICH

Which brand fits which traveler

A guest in a dim grotto-like spring bath with a rock and a falling stream of water
The spring-fed bath at HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO, official gallery.

The choice comes down to what you want the hotel to do for the trip.

The Luxury Collection suits you if

  • The trip marks an occasion and the setting matters: a castle view, a former estate, a 36th-floor lobby
  • You want STARS perks at any hotel in the brand
  • You like slow days: an onsen, a garden, a long dinner

Autograph suits you if

  • You want one strong reason to stay, such as a station location in Osaka or 200 cherry trees in Tokyo
  • You want more room for the money in a big city
  • You enjoy a club lounge: the Osaka lounge earns the strongest praise of any hotel on this page

Tribute Portfolio suits you if

  • You spend your evenings in the bar or the courtyard
  • You want design and character at a lower price
  • You are on a short city break or between trains

A weaker fit for all three

  • You want identical rooms and services in every city; each hotel runs its own way
  • You need large rooms in Europe on a Tribute budget; check square meters first
Worth slowing down for Each brand began by bringing in hotels that already existed: CIGA's Italian palaces, Kessler's seven American hotels, Starwood's first five independents. The brands were built around hotels, and it still shows.

12 · STAYING IN MORE THAN ONE

How to combine them on one trip

The brands work well in sequence: start with the convenient, lively hotel, end with the quiet one.

Japan, 7 nightsThree nights at The Prince Sakura Tower (Shinagawa, for the bullet train), then four at HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO
Kansai, 5 nightsTwo nights at THE OSAKA STATION HOTEL, then three in Kyoto at Mitsui or HIYORI Chapter
Taiwan, 4 nightsTwo nights at a Tribute hotel in Taipei, then two at THE AMNIS by high-speed rail to Kaohsiung
ItalyA night at Duo Milan by Centrale, then a Luxury Collection hotel such as The Gritti Palace in Venice. More in The Luxury Collection, explained
How to plan it
  • Two weeks outSend the occasion, room preferences and arrival times for each hotel; upgrades are subject to availability.
  • Transfer dayAsk the first hotel to send luggage ahead where it can; Japanese hotels often arrange this.
  • Last nightPut the quietest hotel last, so the trip ends in a garden or an onsen.
