Marriott Brands Explained
Marriott's official brand page lists 39 brands in five tiers. When you pick one, three things change what your stay includes: whether a Platinum member can choose breakfast, whether booking through an advisor adds STARS or Luminous perks, and how many of that brand exist where you are going. This page lays out all three for all 39.
- Within the same luxury tier, a Platinum member can choose breakfast at St. Regis, The Luxury Collection and W. At The Ritz-Carlton and EDITION, breakfast is not on the welcome-gift menu.
- Book a STARS hotel through an advisor (The Ritz-Carlton, Ritz-Carlton Reserve, St. Regis, The Luxury Collection, EDITION) and you get daily breakfast for two plus a US$100 hotel credit once per stay. Luminous hotels opt in one by one, and only some of them add the US$100 credit.
- Bulgari counts toward Marriott's luxury hotel total, yet it does not take part in Bonvoy: no points and no elite benefits.
All of these grew from one place: a nine-seat root beer stand that opened in Washington, D.C., in 1927. In June 2026, the JW Marriott Ranthambore Resort & Spa opened in India and pushed the company past 10,000 hotels. The brand page never states a total; I counted the 39 one by one in October 2026.

|---|---|
| Platinum breakfast | Whether a Platinum Elite member can choose breakfast as the welcome gift. Yes: daily breakfast for the member plus one. Resorts only: city hotels give lounge access instead. Free for everyone: every guest gets breakfast, so Platinum usually takes points. F&B credit: about US$10 a day (once per stay at Gaylord). Varies: check the hotel. Compiled from four 2026 guides; see the note on Marriott's terms at the bottom. The brand-by-brand details get their own article (coming soon). |
| Advisor perks | STARS: every hotel in the program must take part. Perks are daily breakfast for two, a US$100 hotel credit once per stay, a personalized amenity, a welcome from management with a note from the General Manager, and early check-in, late check-out and an upgrade when available. Luminous: each hotel decides whether to join; the perks are similar, and the US$100 credit appears only at some hotels. Not listed: not seen in either program's brand list or deals this time. What the booking system shows on the day is what counts. How the two programs differ gets its own article (coming soon). |

Sheraton took its name from a rooftop "Hotel Sheraton" sign on a Boston hotel its founders bought. Replacing the sign cost too much, so every hotel after it became a Sheraton.

Send me your dates Fora independent advisor · California SOT #2151995-50 · Room charges paid directly to the hotel. I book hotels as a Fora travel advisor and earn a commission from the hotel when you book through me.Sources: Marriott's official brand page (read October 15, 2026), Marriott's Q2 2026 results tables (as of June 30), Marriott's 2025 annual report, Marriott's Hong Kong Traditional Chinese Bonvoy terms, Platinum breakfast guides from One Mile at a Time, The Points Guy, Prince of Travel and Frequent Miler (all 2026), and the Marriott STARS and LUMINOUS program pages in the Fora Advisor Portal (read October 15, 2026). Brand histories come from Wikipedia and Marriott press releases.
Where sources disagree: the section of Marriott's terms that governs the elite welcome gift could not be retrieved, so the breakfast column follows what the four guides agree on; confirm with the terms or the hotel before you travel. Fairfield and Element in Asia Pacific (marked †) do not include breakfast for every guest; The Points Guy says Platinum gets 500 points per stay or a food and beverage amenity, while Prince of Travel says breakfast is an option. The Ritz-Carlton's 127 appears to include Ritz-Carlton Reserve; the Marriott Vacation Clubs' 95 covers every timeshare brand; Gaylord is 7 in Marriott's tables and 6 on Wikipedia. Marriott's financial reports group brands differently from the brand page: City Express, Four Points Flex, Series and StudioRes count as Midscale, and Autograph, Tribute, Design Hotels and MGM Collection count as Premium. Marriott's 2025 press releases say "more than 30 brands"; the 2026 versions drop the number.
